James Wilkins was born about 1748 in South Carolina and married Elizabeth White on 16 May 1769 in Chester District, SC. He served as a Sgt. in the Charleston Battalion of SC Artillery and was listed on the roster at the Battle of Ft. Sulivan (Ft. Moultrie), was wounded in the left collarbone and held prisoner for 120 days. James was exchanged for a British prisoner. Upon returning home he found that his farm had been raided by the Tories which angered him so that he returned to service which he was not supposed to do based on his prisoner exchange agreement.
He migrated to Christian Co., KY about 1802 and settled on land near Fairview, which later became part of Todd Co., KY. James Wilkins died 06 Mar 1824 in Todd Co., KY and is buried with his wife and other family members on Goshen Lane, located just off Highway 68/80 about a mile East of Jefferson Davis State Park at Fairview, KY.
