Julius Rutherford enlisted in the army in 1776 in Fincastle, now Wythe County, Virginia, for a three year term. His company commanded by Capt. Roland Matteson, was part of the 12th Virginia Regiment commanded by Col. James Wood, son of Mary (Rutherford) Wood. Julius Rutherford was a member of the 2nd Battalion of the militia of Montgomery County n 1781, and served under Capt. Morgan and Capt. James Montgomery. He participated in the battle of Brandywine.
Julius Rutherford made application for a pension 04 Jul 1818 in Anderson County, Tennessee. He deposed before a justice of peace that he was a brother of Archibald Rutherford of Kentucky who also served in the Revolution.
Julius made an excursion into the Nolichucky country after he had received his discharge and returned to Montgomery County with his kinswoman, Rhoda Rutherford, as his bride. He lived on his father’s farm and was listed on the Virginia tax list 1782-1799, first in Montgomery County and later in Wythe County. He was appointed road overseer in Wythe County 10 Oct 1797. He sold 200 acres of land on Mine Mill Creek adjoining Randal Rutherford 14 Aug 1805.
Julius Rutherford moved from Wythe County, Virginia to Wayne County, Kentucky. After a brief time he moved to Knox County, Tennessee, and lived on the farm of Absalom Rutherford. He later moved to Anderson County.
Julius Rutherford died testate in Anderson County, Tennessee. He named his wife and children in his will.
