John W. Whittle, Sr. was born about 1757 under “Buffalo Ridge” in Amherst Co., VA the son of Matthew Whittle and Elizabeth Warren, grandson of John Whittle, James and Elizabeth Warren. In 1779 John W. Whittle, Sr. and Sarah Josling were married in Amherst County Virginia. Sarah was the daughter of Revolutionary War Patriot John Josling and Diannah Evans.
John Whittle, Sr.’s family was involved in mining in Amherst County and from his mine he furnished gunpowder to General Nathaniel Greene’s army on 26 Feb 1781. For this he was able to file a claim for land in Kentucky in April 1782. The land was adjacent to James Renfro’s land on the Rockcastle River waterway in Lincoln County Kentucky.
John W. Whittle and Sarah Josling had the following children: Mattice, Sophia, John W., Jr., Vincent and Ninian Whittle. Mattice, Sophia, John W. Jr., and Vincent were all born in Lincoln Co., KY.
On 16 Feb 1784, John W. Whittle, Sr. purchased 502 1/2 acres when his son John W., Jr. was three years old. John W. Whittle, Sr. owned land between Hustonville and Stanford, KY in the early 1790’s and sold it and bought land south of the Green River in Liberty. John W. Whittle, Jr., probably with the help of his father, built a large two story log home around 1800 on that land.
On 21 Mar 1803 Lt. John W. Whittle, Sr. was commissioned in the 6th Regt. of the Lincoln County Kentucky Militia.
John W. Whittle, Sr. died on 22 Apr 1816 in Liberty, Casey Co., KY. and was buried on his farm in the family burial ground.
